Unpopular Opinion

I will not ask if I can “take a quick pic of your makeup” on your wedding day. I know pretty much every other MUA and hairdresser does it, it’s just not for me. And there are a couple of reasons why. Firstly, I’m there to do a job, not create content for my own brand. You know who is there to take photos? The photographer. This is why my feed is full of beautiful images from very talented photographers.

Secondly, it’s not a vibe, read the room. Wedding days are hectic, it’s often a case of doing the best possible makeup on a large number of clients, in the shortest possible time. Most wedding days I do not move from my makeup station. I don’t eat, drink or go to the toilet for several hours. I’m certainly not going to waste precious time fluffing around taking photos. I will not compromise time to create content.

And thirdly, if I’m being honest, it actually makes me cringe watching videos of Brides/Bridesmaids nervously staring off into the abyss looking like they are about to pack their dacks. They are the most nervous/excited/anxious/stressed they have ever been in their lives and you’ve just recorded it and showed it to the world. These are just regular people, not models, and posing like a model does not come naturally to most, it’s awkward and looks uncomfortable af, I can almost feel it through the videos #crrrrriiiiinnnnge

I once had a client tell me that a MUA took photos of the entire bridal party and shared them on her socials. The MUA shared everyone except for her. It made her feel like she was not pretty enough to be on someone’s socials. That just broke my heart.

So I will not ask you if I can take a quick pic of your makeup. That’s why I have content days.

Logan & James

Now there is heatwave and then there’s Grafton heatwave. After spending the morning glamming up Logan’s girls in the delightful air conditioning, I opened the door to leave only to be smacked fair in the face by the wall of 42 degree heat outside. That’s bad enough on your wedding day, but then add the 354% humidity that Grafton always seems to offer, and you’ve got some very very warm conditions. It’s a good thing these absolute bombshells rock the glowy dewy look, she was toooasty.

Natural V Neutral Makeup

My most requested look is “something natural”, which is great, because that’s my style of makeup. However, after consultation with the client, most of the time what they are actually wanting is a soft glam look using neutral tones.

Here’s the difference –

Image 1: Sheer foundation, so you can still see aspects of the skin. Eyeshadow that creates a soft light contour of the eye. Natural lashes with a few coats of mascara only. Brushed brows with no fill or shaping. Blush with a soft highlight, no face contouring.  And a soft natural lip colour.

Image 2: Medium to full coverage foundation and concealer. Smokey eye using neutral (think earthy) tones, also working the under eye area. False lashes. Brushed, shaped and filled brows. Face contouring, blush and highlight. Lip lined and filled, topped with lip colour.

Marian & Anders

One of the best things about my job is the people I meet. Every day is a different group of people from all walks of life. I have learnt so many new things just from the conversations I have with each of my clients. My absolutely gorgeous Bride Marian is a Dr of Archeology and the Groom, Anders, is a Mycologist. I can confidently confirm that prior to their wedding I did not know that you could be a Scientist that studies mushrooms, but boy, once I discovered this valuable piece of information it was my time to shine. My back pocket has been chockas full of mushroom jokes for years waiting for this moment. An entire morning full of carefully filtered in mushroom jokes to the point where there was not mushroom for anything else. I have always pictured a scientist as being quite a serious character in a white coat with lots of potions, but it turns out Anders is actually a really fungi. I’m not even sorry.

Bronte & Adam

If there is a horse photo you know I am going to take the opportunity to post it. I loved being a part of this wedding, country girl meets country girl MUA. I feel like I am at home hanging out with my family when I get to work with like-minded country girls. I do have to confess though, I almost came home with a goat. But the professional in me could already see the review – “zero stars, stole a goat. Makeup was fantastic though”.

Harmony & Dane

It was such an honour for me to be a part of Harmony’s wedding featuring Dane. Ulmarra’s Royal Wedding was held on a cracking spring day last year and there was so much to love about it. Harmony’s amazing wedding dress, designed and made by the Bride and her Mum out of vintage doilies and lace. The arbour made by the Bride’s Sister and the cake and flowers put together by the Mother of the Groom. The vintage styling of the outdoor garden at the Ulmarra Hotel, the super adorable lolly table for the kids (and the MUA), and plant cuttings in vintage bottles for the guest favours. My favourite thing though was the special guest appearance of Dane, at Harmony’s Wedding.

Also, sitting in the seat and not knowing what you want on the day isn’t as bad as people make out… trust your makeup artist!! I did. I absolutely love Catie’s features – red hair, hazel eyes and freckles. One of my all time favourite combos to work with.

I am so grateful to all of these amazing young ladies that give me their time and beautiful faces to work with to create content for you all. Poor Catie, she’s just come in to get her makeup done for an event and I start frothing at the mouth at her beautiful features and beg her to come back and model for me. These girls aren’t models, they’re everyday people pushing themselves out of their comfort zone to create something beautiful. I think she looks bloody stunning.

I’ve been super busy behind the scenes lately. You may have seen some new images pop up in my stories. I’ve been busy creating new content before the autumn wedding season kicks off. I’ll also be updating my portfolio with some fresh new images that reflect my current level of work. Watch me crumble like a cadbury flake when it comes to removing the old work though, a lot of those images don’t reflect my current style, but I still love them.

Jade & Dean

This is your sign to do your wedding, your way. It can be so easy to fall into the three T’s…. Tradition, Trends and Tiktok videos. But realistically, other than the legals, you can really do your wedding however you want. Take Jade’s “Cruella de Vil” inspired look, complete with black hair and a white streak. The brief was a smokey eye, big lashes and a deep burgundy lip. Top it all off with a stunning black dress and did somebody say ”crown”?! Hell yeah!

Bridal makeup doesn’t have to be “bridal”.

Ruby & Mitch

Minnie Waters is becoming an increasingly popular wedding destination within the Clarence Valley. I have done so many weddings out there over the past few years that I can confidently say that I have worked in every second house along the ocean front. There are some stunning holiday homes in Minnie Waters with the most amazing views of the ocean. Ruby and Mitch chose to say “I do” on the headland over looking beautiful Minnie Water beach.
